I emailed this to brian as well, but I figured I'd see if anyone here can help me out.

I got my M2 Encore (upgraded) rig built up but I've been unable to get the lens mount accurately set up. I went through the instructions, focused everything up for 3 feet, got my focus card at precicely 3 feet from the film plane (which, as per brian's instructions is measured 13mm back from the front of the M2 case) and I am still not able to get anything in focus - the setting I did find that worked was around 4.5 feet on the lens (with the focus card at 3 feet) but now I can't focus to infinity.

I am using Canon FD Lenses - setting up the rig with a Canon FD 50mm f/1.2L

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Ironically enough, I just got finished trying this again, and I got it... it's within an inch or two, and I know I can do better. just gotta spend more time with it. What went so wrong last time, you may ask? Well, let's just say that doing anything requiring clear vision when you've stayed up until 5 or 6 in the morning is... well... going to need re-adjusting.

Brian, Drew or whoever, you guys can delete this thread if you want. I can't seem to delete it now that it's been replied to.

Thanks again!

No worries, Trevor. I'm glad you got it.

Trevor,

I'm having difficulty calibrating the collimating lens as well. I'm not able to get the focus chart in focus at all. One thing that I was confused about in the tutorial video was what I needed to set the camera focus to or if I even touch it. It's never said. Here's what I've done so far. I've placed my focus chart 3' from the focal plane which I read is 13mm back from the front of the m2 housing. I have a Canon FD 50mm f1.4 lens which I've opened the iris all the way. I've set the focus on the lens to 3ft. I've also zoomed into the chart and it's completely blurry. I can move the collimating lens back and forth, but I can never achieve sharp focus. Am I doing something wrong? I appreciate the help.

Hi Derick,

Set your backfocus before your collimate. You shouldn't be zooming/focusing the camera during the process, and if your backfocus isn't sharp you'll never get a sharp focus on the chart.

Cheers!

Thanks for the tip, Andrew. I'll give it a try. I was a little confused from the video tutorial you guys posted on Vimeo because during the collimate setup process, you guys say to zoom in on the focus chart. I guess that part of the video is wrong or am I misunderstanding the steps?

Hi Derick,

That is confusing! I'll change it. Thanks for the feedback.

Cheers!

Well months later, I'm upgraded to the M2e but remain a bit in the dark re: the collimating lens mount.

For the record, I upgraded right in-store, on my favorite distributor's glass countertop with a Redrock Rep (good lookin' out Loren!) proctoring the test. We got it done in minutes and I believe I'm good (focused and all)... but still this issue of pre-zooming prior to collimation seems like an undone.

I watched the Redrock Tutorial on Vimeo and followed everything except the ZOOM IN bit.

TinyBeef #1: I operate the HV30 and -- I dunno about you all -- but if I full zoom into the Cinescreen, there's no hope of getting a focus at something 6-inches in front of the camera.

Instead I zoomed in as far as possible, set cam focus then worked on the 35mm lens from there. Right?

TinyBeef #2: My collimating lens mount only has about a 1/4 - 1/2 turn worth of play. Cranking it around doesn't produce any noticeable shift in focus. All that seems to happen is that the ring moves itself slightly back and fourth between the RR case and the lens mount itself.

Did I pass the class or what?

Advance Thanks,

:LJ
